Gardai launch bank robbery investigation

March 16, 2012
By David Richardson

An investigation has been launched after bank robbery in Abbeyleix, Co Laois this morning.

A lone robber entered the Bank of Ireland in the town at around 10.20am armed with a handgun. He demanded cash from staff and subsequently made off on foot with a “significant” sum of money, though nobody was injured in the incident.

The raider is described of being about 5’6? in height and of thin build. While his face was concealed, he was wearing dark clothing including black track suit bottoms and white runners.

The bank was open to the public at the time and the staff and customers are said to be shaken and traumatised from the incident.

A forensic examination will take place at the scene today and it is understood the financial institution will remain closed while this takes place.

Interviews of witnesses are currently being conducted and CCTV footage will be examined.

Gardaí say the man may have disrupted traffic while he made his getaway and are asking anyone who saw him before or after to contact them.
